Levi Colwill’s close-range finish shortly after the interval secured a crucial victory for Chelsea at Nottingham Forest, ensuring their qualification for next season’s Champions League. The result confirmed a fourth-place Premier League finish for Enzo Maresca’s men, who entered the match knowing a win was essential to lock in their place among Europe’s elite.
Although the match was tense, it lacked the explosive drama expected from a decisive clash. Both Pedro Neto and Chris Wood failed to convert promising opportunities in the opening period, and clear chances were few and far between. However, Colwill’s decisive goal five minutes into the second half proved enough to separate the two sides.
Despite the defeat, Nottingham Forest ended their campaign in seventh place, which was sufficient to qualify for the UEFA Conference League. Although they fell out of contention for a Champions League spot late in the season, their return to European competition marks a significant achievement just three years after rejoining the Premier League following a 23-year absence.
Forest had occupied top-four positions during long stretches of the season but won just twice in their last eight fixtures. Their inability to win any of their final four home matches ultimately cost them a place higher up the table. In the closing moments against Chelsea, Chris Wood spurned their best opportunity, firing over in stoppage time.
Maresca’s side now turns attention to the upcoming Conference League final against Real Betis in Poland. The manager had previously stated that the club’s transfer strategy would hinge on whether they secured a Champions League berth, and now that qualification is confirmed, preparations for next season can move forward.
The victory not only met internal expectations but also provided momentum ahead of Wednesday’s final, giving Chelsea a timely boost as they aim to end the season with silverware.
