Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart has revealed his decision to retire at the conclusion of the current season. Despite feeling “physically great”, the 36-year-old former England and Manchester City keeper expressed his desire to “smash through the finish line” as he embarks on his final campaign in Glasgow.
End of an illustrious career
Having played 75 times for his country, Hart’s retirement marks the conclusion of a remarkable career spanning over two decades. With double title success in both England and Scotland, along with six cup medals from his stints at Manchester City and Celtic squads, his impact on the game is undeniable.
In a statement to Celtic TV, Hart explained his rationale behind the timing of his retirement: “There is obviously a conversation around the goalkeeping position for next season and I think it’s really important that with the blessing of the club we get the message out and it takes one thing out of what people are going to speculate over.”
A fond farewell
Manager Brendan Rodgers paid tribute to Hart’s contributions, emphasizing the significant loss his retirement represents for the sport. Rodgers lauded Hart as a “huge praise and congratulations,” highlighting his stellar performances on the pitch and his exemplary character off it.
Reflecting on Hart’s tenure at Celtic, Rodgers remarked, “He has been such a brilliant asset to Celtic of course and the wider game at the highest levels, domestically and internationally.” He continued, “But more than that, he is a tremendous man, just brilliant to work with, someone who I know has been a great team-mate to so many throughout his career and a player who never gives anything but his absolute best.”
