Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim believes that lifting the Europa League trophy would bring his team a sense of belief that outweighs any monetary benefits. Speaking after his side’s emphatic semi-final victory over Athletic Bilbao, Amorim emphasized the emotional reward of winning over the financial windfall associated with Champions League qualification.
United’s 7-1 aggregate triumph secured an all-English final against Tottenham Hotspur. While victory would unlock a projected £100 million through entry to Europe’s top competition, Amorim insisted the psychological boost for the team and supporters would be far more valuable.
“The financial side isn’t the priority,” Amorim stated. “Winning something instills confidence – proving we can achieve meaningful results and bring joy to our fans. It’s about transformation, not just next season’s Champions League.”
Despite a dominant 3-0 away win in the first leg, United endured a shaky start at Old Trafford. They fell behind early and looked unsure of themselves for much of the game before a late surge secured a 4-1 result on the night.
Amorim admitted he remains uncertain about which version of his team will show up on any given matchday – a concerning admission from a manager hired for his tactical clarity. He conceded that, by now, both he and the squad should be performing more consistently.
Though United have impressed in European competition, they’ve struggled to find rhythm in the Premier League. Wins have been rare, with only Ipswich and Leicester defeated since a February loss at Tottenham – their third against Ange Postecoglou’s side this season.
Interestingly, Tottenham have also endured an erratic campaign. Despite United’s domestic troubles, they still sit ahead of Spurs in the table. With Postecoglou reportedly nearing the end of his time in North London, Amorim believes both managers face similar pressure heading into the final.
“It’s an all-or-nothing game for both sides,” said the Portuguese coach. “Even if Ange has time left on his contract, we’re both under similar scrutiny.”
Mason Mount emerged as the hero against Bilbao, scoring twice to help United overturn their early deficit. The former Chelsea midfielder, signed for £55 million in 2023, has endured a tough spell marked by injuries and limited opportunities.
Before this match, Mount had only managed two goals and was yet to score at Old Trafford. He’s often come under fire for his lack of impact since arriving at the club. On Thursday, however, he provided a timely reminder of his talent.
His first goal came from a quick turn and precise finish after receiving a short pass from Leny Yoro. His second was even more audacious, spotting the Bilbao goalkeeper off his line and scoring from 45 yards.
Reflecting on the long-awaited moment, Mount said, “I saw the keeper off his line and thought, ‘If it comes to me, I’ll take the shot.’ I just focused on getting it on target – it’s a moment I’ve been waiting for.”
Amorim praised the midfielder’s dedication, noting the positive reaction from teammates. “Everyone was delighted for him,” said the head coach. “He works so hard to be fit and available. He’s a quality player, and both goals were outstanding.”
