Liverpool advanced to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a 2-1 victory over Southampton on Tuesday, sealed by Hugo Ekitike’s late strike.
The French forward, who netted in the 85th minute, celebrated by pulling off his shirt and raising it to the crowd. That choice earned him a second booking and a dismissal, as he had already been cautioned earlier.
Ekitike’s suspension rules him out of Saturday’s Premier League clash against Crystal Palace, a setback with competition for places intensifying as Alexander Isak nears full sharpness.
The striker apologised afterwards on social media, admitting the emotion overwhelmed him and thanking fans and team-mates for their support.
Slot unimpressed with celebration
Manager Arne Slot voiced his frustration after the match, describing the incident as “stupid” regardless of whether Ekitike was already on a yellow.
Slot highlighted that celebrations should acknowledge the team’s contribution, pointing to Federico Chiesa’s assist for the decisive goal. He stressed that while teammates saw out the win, the absence at the weekend is damaging.
The coach, however, suggested the 22-year-old would learn from the experience, noting his youth and positive impact since joining Liverpool in the summer.
Bright start for Ekitike
Ekitike moved from Eintracht Frankfurt in July for £69m and has made an immediate impression.
With Isak being eased into the squad, Ekitike led the attack and delivered three league goals and one assist across five appearances, helping Liverpool maintain a perfect domestic run since mid-August.
Both yellow cards on Tuesday were avoidable. He was first cautioned shortly after replacing Isak for throwing the ball into the air following a foul.
Pundit Chris Sutton criticised the red card on BBC Radio 5 Live, calling it “sheer stupidity” given how significant Ekitike has been to Liverpool’s strong start.
Isak’s readiness for Palace
Liverpool’s record signing has been carefully managed since arriving, with two starts in cup competitions and brief minutes in the league.
Isak featured against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League earlier this month and began against Southampton before being replaced at half-time. He also came off the bench during the Merseyside derby against Everton.
The striker scored against Southampton and had another chance saved early in the match. Afterward, he said he feels stronger with every appearance and is closer to being able to make a difference from the start.
His manager’s decision to substitute him at the break may have been aimed at ensuring he is fresher for the upcoming fixture at Selhurst Park.
