Giorgi Mamardashvili is ready for the task ahead after finalizing his transfer from Valencia to Liverpool. The 24-year-old goalkeeper made his unofficial first appearance during a preseason friendly against Preston North End, marking the beginning of a new phase in his career.

During his time in Spain, Mamardashvili was a regular starter for more than two seasons, but his move to Merseyside presents an entirely different test. At Liverpool, he enters a squad already boasting the presence of Alisson Becker, widely regarded as one of the finest in the position today.

Learning from a world-class peer

Despite the fierce competition, Mamardashvili remains optimistic and sees his new environment as a chance to improve. Speaking to the club, he shared his excitement about working with the Brazilian goalkeeper, calling Alisson “one of the best in the world” and expressing a desire to grow by training alongside him.

Acknowledging the difficulty of earning minutes, the Georgian international described the situation as a “challenge,” one that he welcomes with determination. “I like challenges,” he stated, emphasizing his commitment to giving everything and contributing to the team. He also voiced hopes of making his mark in a club known for its strong goalkeeping heritage.

A platform built on recent success

With Alisson firmly established as Liverpool’s first choice, opportunities may initially be limited. However, the Brazilian’s history of injuries could open the door for Mamardashvili to feature in key matches, much like former backup Caoimhín Kelleher did before moving to Brentford. Kelleher made 20 Premier League appearances over the last two campaigns.

Mamardashvili arrives with momentum, having impressed during Euro 2024. His standout performances helped Georgia defeat Portugal and advance to the knockout round in their debut at a major international tournament. That display earned him a nomination for the 2024 Yashin Trophy, where he finished seventh.
