Updated to 24 May 2026, Matchday 38 of the 2025-26 season.

The Premier League has staged more than 13,100 matches across 34 seasons since it kicked off in August 1992, and only 161 players have lasted long enough to reach 300 premier league appearances in it. James Milner sits at the top of that list on 658, a record he took from Gareth Barry in February 2026 and then closed out for good when he retired at the end of the season.

Reaching 300 games means close to eight complete 38-match campaigns of selection, fitness and form. This page lists every player who has done it, from 1992-93 to 2025-26, with clubs, nationality, position and the first and last seasons they appeared.

Premier League appearance records at a glance

  • Most appearances: James Milner, 658 (2002 to 2026)
  • Most for a single club: Ryan Giggs, 632 for Manchester United
  • Most by a goalkeeper: David James, 572
  • Players with 300 or more: 161
  • Nations represented: 25
  • Seasons covered: 34, from 1992-93 to 2025-26

Who has the most Premier League appearances?

James Milner has the most Premier League appearances with 658. He made his debut for Leeds United in November 2002 at the age of 16 and played his final game for Brighton and Hove Albion in the 2025-26 season, a span of 24 campaigns. He overtook Gareth Barry’s mark of 653 when he started at Brentford in February 2026, and announced his retirement on 1 June 2026 with the record settled at 658.

Only four players have passed 600 appearances:

  1. James Milner, 658, six clubs, 2002 to 2026
  2. Gareth Barry, 653, four clubs, 1998 to 2018
  3. Ryan Giggs, 632, Manchester United only, 1992 to 2014
  4. Frank Lampard, 609, three clubs, 1996 to 2015

David James is fifth on 572 and the highest-placed goalkeeper, followed by Gary Speed on 535 and Emile Heskey on 516.

Most Premier League appearances for one club

Ryan Giggs holds the single-club record with 632 appearances for Manchester United, every one of his Premier League games. Jamie Carragher (508 for Liverpool) and Steven Gerrard (504 for Liverpool) follow, with John Terry on 492 for Chelsea and Paul Scholes on 499 for Manchester United.

More than 20 of the 161 players on this list never appeared for a second Premier League club. Among the more recent one-club men are David de Gea (415 for Manchester United), Mark Noble (414 for West Ham United), Hugo Lloris (361 for Tottenham Hotspur), Cesar Azpilicueta (349 for Chelsea), Jamie Vardy (342 for Leicester City) and Son Heung-Min (333 for Tottenham Hotspur).

At the other extreme, Peter Crouch and Andy Cole each turned out for seven different Premier League clubs while passing 300 games.

Premier League 300 appearance club by nation

England supplies 94 of the 161 players, well over half the list. The Republic of Ireland is next with 14, then France and Scotland with seven each and Wales with five. Twenty-five nations are represented in total, from Argentina to Trinidad and Tobago, with 12 of them contributing a single player.

Most Premier League appearances by position

Longevity favours midfielders and defenders, the roles where a player can adapt as pace fades. Milner, Barry, Giggs and Lampard, the four 600-game men, were all midfielders.

  • Goalkeeper: David James, 572, across Liverpool, Portsmouth, Manchester City, Aston Villa and West Ham United
  • Defender: Rio Ferdinand, 504, with Ashley Young next on 485
  • Midfielder: James Milner, 658
  • Forward: Wayne Rooney, 491, which also brought him 208 goals

Goalkeepers are better represented than their numbers suggest. David James, Mark Schwarzer (514), Shay Given (451), Brad Friedel (450) and Petr Cech (443) all cleared 440, helped by the fact that a first-choice keeper who stays fit plays close to every minute of a season.

Which players are still climbing the list?

Fourteen players on this list featured in the 2025-26 season. Jordan Henderson leads them on 463, ahead of Kyle Walker on 446 and James Ward-Prowse on 422. Danny Welbeck reached the 400 mark, while Virgil van Dijk (339), Mohamed Salah (328), Alex Iwobi (320) and Declan Rice (313) all have room to climb.

None of them is realistically chasing 658. Henderson would need close to another five full seasons of near ever-present football to get there, at an age where that becomes progressively harder. Milner’s record looks safe for some time.

Premier League appearance milestones and oddities

  • Longest career span: James Milner, 24 seasons from 2002-03 to 2025-26
  • Most clubs: Peter Crouch and Andy Cole, seven each
  • Founding-season survivors: Giggs, Speed, Sol Campbell, Alan Shearer, Gareth Southgate, Nicky Butt and others played in 1992-93 and went on to 300 or more
  • Fewest clubs at the top: three of the top four played for four clubs or fewer
  • The 300 barrier: equal to 7.9 seasons of a 38-game campaign, or 7.5 seasons of the 42-game format used until 1994-95

Why 300 Premier League appearances still means something

Squad rotation, expanded European calendars and sharper sports science have changed how often a player starts. Reaching 300 games now demands the trust of several managers, a body that holds up into a player’s thirties and the willingness to move clubs when a role disappears. Milner’s 658 came from six clubs and four different positions; Giggs’s 632 came from staying put for 22 years. Both routes are rare, and the list below is short for a reason.

For the scoring side of the same story, see the all-time top 100 Premier League goalscorers, where Alan Shearer’s 260 has stood since 2006. Club-by-club appearance leaders are collected on the Premier League record appearances page, and the age extremes are covered in youngest and oldest Premier League appearances. More season-by-season data sits in the appearances archive and across all-time Premier League statistics.
