Manchester United has bolstered its defense with the signing of centre-back Matthijs de Ligt and right-back Noussair Mazraoui, both acquired from Bayern Munich in a strategic move to strengthen the squad ahead of the upcoming season.

After securing Leny Yoro from Lille, United quickly set their sights on De Ligt, who was available for transfer. The Dutch defender was eager to join, and after initial negotiations saw a bid turned down, the clubs settled on a deal worth €45m (£38.6m) upfront, with an additional €5m (£4.3m) in potential bonuses.

Reflecting on his decision to move to Old Trafford, De Ligt shared, “When United showed interest, I felt a surge of excitement about taking on a new challenge at such a prestigious club. The discussions made it clear that the club has a strong vision, and they see me playing an integral role in that.”

De Ligt also spoke about his past connection with Erik ten Hag, who was instrumental in shaping his early career. “Working with Erik ten Hag again is something I’m really looking forward to. He knows how to get the best out of me, and I’m ready to bring my experience to this historic club,” De Ligt stated.

Mazraoui to replace Wan-Bissaka at right-Back

United didn’t stop with De Ligt; they quickly followed up by securing Noussair Mazraoui to fill the right-back position, previously held by Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The Moroccan defender was signed for an initial fee of £13m, which could increase to £14m depending on performance-related clauses.

Mazraoui expressed his enthusiasm about the move, saying, “It’s a dream come true to join Manchester United squad, and I’m excited to step onto the pitch at Old Trafford in the iconic red shirt.”

He noted the club’s strong ambition and the sense of purpose he felt from everyone involved in the transfer. Reuniting with Erik ten Hag, who had a significant impact on his growth as a player, was a key reason for his decision. “I know exactly what Erik expects from his players, and I’m ready to give everything to help the team achieve its goals,” Mazraoui said.

With these acquisitions, United has taken decisive steps to fortify their defense, bringing in players who are eager to make their mark and contribute to the club’s future successes.
