Manchester United have parted ways with manager Erik ten Hag following a difficult start to the 2024/25 season, which sees the club languishing in 14th place in the Premier League. United’s latest setback came in a 2-1 loss to West Ham United, where a late penalty from Jarrod Bowen sealed their fourth defeat in nine league games. With only four wins across 14 matches in all competitions, United sit seven points adrift of Champions League qualification, a record that ultimately ended Ten Hag’s tenure after two and a half years.

A brief statement from the club acknowledged Ten Hag’s contributions, expressing gratitude for his work and wishing him well in the future. Ruud van Nistelrooy will step in as interim head coach, working alongside the current coaching staff until a new permanent manager is appointed.

Ten Hag’s contract extension and difficult last season

Ten Hag was reportedly informed of his dismissal on Monday morning, just months after INEOS, United’s new minority owners, extended his contract by an additional year. The decision to extend his stay surprised some, as United had just concluded a disappointing season in 8th place with 60 points, including 14 losses in the Premier League. Nevertheless, his contract renewal was largely seen as recognition of his success in securing the FA Cup title with a victory over Manchester City.

Though Ten Hag had previously led United to Carabao Cup success in his first year, his overall performance was impacted by a series of poor results and an unfortunate injury crisis that plagued his squad.

Setbacks with big-name signings and on-field performances

During his time at United, Ten Hag brought in several high-profile signings intended to elevate the team’s performance. However, these acquisitions failed to meet expectations, compounding his struggles as manager. Despite these challenges, Ten Hag consistently defended his position, maintaining that he was the right person to lead the club forward.

Search for new manager underway

With Ten Hag’s departure, the search for a permanent head coach has begun. Thomas Tuchel, a previous candidate for the role, is no longer in contention after accepting the position as England’s manager. Among the names linked to the job are Gareth Southgate, Thomas Frank, Xavi, and Julian Nagelsmann, each having been discussed as potential successors at various points.
