Manchester City’s 5-0 demolition of Sparta Prague in the Champions League was marked by an extraordinary goal from Erling Haaland, leaving Pep Guardiola and the Etihad crowd in awe. Haaland’s acrobatic back-heel finish became the standout moment of the night, overshadowing the comprehensive performance by the reigning champions.

As the ball sailed into the box, few could have predicted what would happen next. Savinho’s chipped cross appeared harmless, but Haaland defied logic, twisting his towering frame mid-air to flick the ball past a stunned Peter Vindahl. Even City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, initially missed the moment. His view was obstructed by one of his own players, leaving him to watch the replay in disbelief.

“I couldn’t see it clearly at first,” Guardiola admitted after the match. “But once I saw the replay, it was unbelievable. For most players, this would be impossible. He’s got that unique ability to create magic out of nothing.”

Haaland’s wonder goal came with just his 12th touch of the match, his eighth shot in total, sending shockwaves through the stadium and capping off an already dominant City performance.

For many, Haaland’s remarkable strike recalled previous moments of individual brilliance. Guardiola himself drew comparisons to a similar acrobatic goal Haaland scored for Borussia Dortmund in 2022. “It reminded me of what he did for Dortmund,” said Guardiola. “Both goals are incredible. I can’t say which one was harder, but both are special.”

The City boss even likened Haaland’s effort to Johan Cruyff’s iconic 1973 goal for Barcelona, while others saw flashes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s trademark acrobatic finishing. Haaland’s ability to execute such feats with ease has cemented his status among the world’s top strikers.

Haaland’s teammates were equally astonished by the audacious strike. Midfielder Matheus Nunes, who had been on the pitch during the goal, struggled to find words to describe it. “I couldn’t believe what I saw,” Nunes confessed. “I watched him do something similar on TV when he was at Dortmund, but to see it up close was unreal.”

Phil Foden, who opened the scoring with a fine finish of his own, marveled at Haaland’s athleticism. “I joked with him after the game, saying if I tried that I’d probably injure myself,” Foden laughed. “He’s just built differently. Those legs of his can do things the rest of us can’t.”

Even Sparta Prague’s coach, Lars Friis, couldn’t help but offer his admiration for Haaland’s talents. “He’s one of the best in the world, without question,” Friis said after the match. “We thought we had him under control, but then he produces something like that. What can you do?”

Bernardo Silva perhaps summed it up best, standing still in disbelief as Haaland celebrated near the corner flag. Silva, hand on hip and scratching his head, encapsulated the reaction of everyone in the stadium – a mix of wonder and admiration for a player who continues to redefine what’s possible on the pitch.
