Inter Milan started their Serie A title defense with frustration, conceding a late equalizer to draw 2-2 with Genoa, marking the first time a Serie A champion has failed to win on opening day since 2015.
Alessandro Vogliacco opened the scoring for Genoa, but Inter’s new signing Marcus Thuram turned the tide with two goals. His first came from a precise header, followed by a composed finish over the goalkeeper, seemingly securing three points for Simone Inzaghi’s side. However, in stoppage time, a penalty was awarded to Genoa after Yann Bisseck was penalized for a handball. Junior Messias had his initial spot-kick saved, but he swiftly converted the rebound to secure a draw.
Reflecting on the result, Inzaghi expressed his disappointment: “The team delivered a professional performance, but when you’re ahead like that, you can’t afford to concede, especially not in that fashion.”
AC Milan found themselves in a difficult situation against Torino, trailing 2-0 with only a minute of regular time remaining. Malick Thiaw’s unfortunate own goal, combined with Duvan Zapata’s header, put Torino in control of the game.
However, a resilient AC Milan refused to surrender. Alvaro Morata, making his debut for the Rossoneri, pulled one back in the 89th minute. The fightback continued deep into stoppage time when Noah Okafor netted the equalizer, salvaging a point from what looked like a certain defeat.
Parma, returning to Serie A after a three-year absence, earned a 1-1 draw against Fiorentina. Dennis Man gave the home side the lead with a well-placed shot, but Fiorentina’s captain Cristiano Biraghi delivered a stunning free-kick from a difficult angle to bring his team level.
In Saturday’s other fixture, Empoli and Monza played out a goalless stalemate, leaving both teams with a point apiece to start their season.
