Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been named global head of soccer at Red Bull, starting his new position on January 1, 2025. The 57-year-old German coach expressed his enthusiasm for this new challenge, marking his transition from a managerial role to a broader strategic position in the world of football.
“After nearly 25 years coaching from the sidelines, I am thrilled to take on a project like this,” Klopp stated. “Though my role will be different, my love for the game and the people behind it remains unchanged.”
Red Bull, a well-known brand in sports, owns several football clubs including RB Leipzig in Germany, Red Bull Salzburg in Austria, and New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer. The energy drinks company also has stakes in Brazilian side Red Bull Bragantino and recently acquired a minority share in Leeds United, becoming their shirt sponsor in the process.
Though Klopp will not be involved in day-to-day club operations, his new role will allow him to provide guidance on key areas such as playing philosophy, transfer decisions, and coach development. Red Bull’s CEO of corporate projects and investments, Oliver Mintzlaff, highlighted Klopp’s stature in the football world.
“Jurgen Klopp is one of the most significant and influential individuals in football, possessing remarkable expertise and leadership,” Mintzlaff said. “As head of soccer, he will have a transformative impact on our international football endeavors and help us continue to grow.”
Klopp brings a wealth of experience to Red Bull, having won eight trophies during his nine-year tenure at Liverpool, including the Premier League and Champions League. His managerial career began in 2001 with Mainz, followed by a successful stint at Borussia Dortmund, where he secured two Bundesliga titles and guided the club to the 2013 Champions League final.
Red Bull’s sports investments extend beyond football, with involvement in ice hockey, extreme sports, motorsports, and Formula 1, where Red Bull Racing is currently dominating both the drivers’ and constructors’ championships. Klopp’s appointment will be officially announced at a press conference scheduled for mid-January.
