Everton have completed the signing of Jake O’Brien from Lyon, securing the 23-year-old centre-back on a four-year deal valued at £16.4 million. The Republic of Ireland international made 27 appearances for the French club last season. O’Brien’s arrival marks Everton’s fifth addition this summer, following the acquisitions of midfielder Tim Iroegbunam, forwards Iliman Ndiaye and Jesper Lindstrom, and the return of Jack Harrison on loan from Leeds.

O’Brien expressed his excitement about the move, saying, “I’m ecstatic and so pleased to have joined. Playing in the Premier League with a club as historic as Everton has always been a dream for me. This is a very thrilling opportunity.” He praised Everton as a “massive club” with a “bright future,” revealing that despite interest from other teams, Everton was his top choice. “They’ve shown belief in me, and now it’s my chance to show why on the field,” he stated.

O’Brien’s path to Everton

O’Brien’s football journey began with Cork City, his hometown team, before moving to Crystal Palace’s academy on loan, eventually securing a permanent move to the Premier League side. His development included loan stints at Swindon Town and Belgian club RWD Molenbeek, leading to his transfer to Lyon for an undisclosed fee last summer.

The young defender was drawn to Everton by manager Sean Dyche’s track record of nurturing young talent, especially highlighting the progress of fellow centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite. Dyche commented on O’Brien’s signing, saying, “Jake bolsters our talented group of centre-backs and introduces more competition within the squad, which is essential for our growth. Despite his youth, he has garnered significant experience abroad and at the international level. He has the potential to develop into a top-tier player for Everton in the Premier League.”

With his signing, O’Brien looks forward to making a substantial impact at Everton, aiming to strengthen their defense and leverage his international experience to contribute to the team’s success in the coming seasons.
