Antoine Griezmann, one of the most iconic players in French football history, has decided to step away from international duties at the age of 33. The forward, currently playing for Atletico Madrid, leaves behind an illustrious international career, having represented France 137 times and scored 44 goals.
Griezmann was an instrumental figure in France’s 2018 World Cup triumph, netting a crucial penalty in the 4-2 victory over Croatia in the final. His contributions also extended to France’s Nations League win in 2021. Announcing his decision through a heartfelt video on social media, Griezmann reflected on his decade-long journey, stating, “It is with a heart full of memories that I close this chapter of my life. Thank you for this magnificent tricolour adventure and see you soon.”
A decade of achievements
Having made his debut for the national team under Didier Deschamps in 2014, Griezmann quickly established himself as a key player. His most notable tournament performance came during Euro 2016, where he emerged as the top scorer with six goals, although France fell short in the final against Portugal.
Griezmann’s contribution to French football goes beyond his statistics. His versatility and consistency were crucial to France’s success over the past decade. He played a significant role during the 2022 World Cup, where France reached the final only to be defeated by Argentina in a dramatic penalty shootout after a 3-3 draw. Griezmann’s efforts in these tournaments cemented his place as one of the greatest players in French football history.
The forward faced a challenging moment in 2023 when he missed out on becoming the national team captain, a role that went to Kylian Mbappe after Hugo Lloris retired. Although the decision was tough to accept, Griezmann continued to contribute to the team and participated in Euro 2024, where France was eliminated by eventual champions Spain in the semifinals.
Deschamps and Mbappe pay tribute
Didier Deschamps, who coached Griezmann throughout his international career, praised the forward for his dedication and importance to the team. “We’ve had a long discussion about [his retirement] recently,” Deschamps said. “Since his debut 10 years ago, our relationship has been based on trust and frankness. Even though his club career continues, Antoine will forever be a monumental figure in French football.”
Deschamps further acknowledged their close relationship, saying Griezmann was often considered his “favourite” player. He added, “From the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything, Grizou.”
Kylian Mbappe, now playing for Real Madrid, also expressed his admiration for his longtime teammate. Describing Griezmann as one of the most significant players of the modern era for France, Mbappe said, “Thank you for the unforgettable memories. You carried this team for years and were instrumental in leading it to the top with multiple titles. It was an honour and pleasure to play alongside you.”
With his departure, Griezmann leaves a legacy of success, dedication, and excellence, passing the baton to the next generation of French football stars.
