Newcastle United’s midfielder Sandro Tonali is set to return to action from 28 August after serving a 10-month suspension for breaching betting rules. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) imposed the ban on the 24-year-old in October 2023 due to violations of regulations that prohibit players from betting on football matches organised by the FIGC, UEFA, or FIFA during his time in Italy.
Tonali joined Newcastle in a high-profile £55 million transfer from AC Milan in July 2023, but his suspension came shortly after he had played just 12 games for the club.
Newcastle United announced that the FIGC had officially confirmed the length of Tonali’s suspension, which will conclude on 27 August. This paves the way for the Italian midfielder to return to the squad, with his first potential appearance being in the Carabao Cup against Nottingham Forest, depending on the timing of the fixture. Should he not be selected for that match, his comeback could instead happen in the Premier League fixture against Tottenham Hotspur on 1 September.
Tonali’s suspension is his second disciplinary action for betting breaches. In May 2024, he was handed a two-month ban by the English Football Association after admitting to similar violations. However, this punishment is suspended and will only be enforced if he commits further breaches before the season’s end.
Despite being unable to compete, Tonali has remained involved with the squad, training with the team throughout pre-season. Manager Eddie Howe has highlighted the midfielder’s focus and readiness as he approaches the end of his suspension. “He’s been working hard in training and is eager for his return. His edge is there now,” said Howe, emphasising the player’s importance to the team.
Newcastle will begin their Premier League campaign on 17 August at home against Southampton, with Tonali unable to participate due to his suspension. Nonetheless, his expected return at the end of August is likely to provide a welcome boost as the team pushes forward into a demanding season ahead.
