Manchester United’s manager Erik ten Hag has come to the defense of Marcus Rashford, asserting the striker’s determination to support the club during the remaining matches of the season. Rashford, aged 26, notably found himself excluded from the starting lineup during Thursday’s 4-3 Premier League defeat against Chelsea, a match in which United initially held a 3-2 lead before conceding two late stoppage-time goals.

Rashford’s role as a substitute came just before United’s surge in the game, yet his performance prompted criticism, particularly regarding his perceived lack of pressing, which gained traction on social media following the defeat. The scrutiny intensified as Rashford’s step-brother and agent, Dwaine Maynard, responded to comments made by former United captains Gary Neville and Roy Keane on the ‘Stick to Football’ Podcast, where Rashford’s form and commitment to the team were questioned.

Gary Neville remarked that Rashford “wasn’t right,” while Roy Keane suggested he required a figurative “kick up the backside.” This critique aligns with a narrative Rashford’s camp feels has unfairly singled him out for criticism, with little protection from the accompanying negativity. Dwaine Maynard, in a social media post, urged Neville and Keane to address any “genuine concerns” they may have directly with Rashford, rather than airing them publicly.

Despite mounting criticism, manager Erik ten Hag refrained from citing fitness issues for Rashford’s performance dip compared to his prolific last season, during which he scored 30 goals. Instead, ten Hag emphasized Rashford’s potential to “change the momentum,” acknowledging the striker’s recent questions about his on-pitch work rate and off-field conduct. Rashford himself had addressed concerns about his commitment to the club in February, urging critics to display “more humanity” in their judgments.

Despite the setback at Stamford Bridge, which leaves United sixth in the Premier League standings, ten Hag remains optimistic about Rashford’s motivation. With European qualification still within reach and the FA Cup semi-finals looming, along with the upcoming European Championship, Rashford has ample reasons to strive for excellence. Ten Hag pointed out Rashford’s recent improvement in form, highlighting his goal-scoring prowess leading up to the Brentford game as evidence of his enduring determination to succeed with Manchester United.
