Barcelona are facing a major dilemma after first-choice goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen suffered a significant injury during their 5-1 victory against Villarreal on Sunday. The German international was forced to exit the match on a stretcher, visibly in pain after an awkward landing following a challenge. His departure saw Inaki Pena take over between the posts.

The club later confirmed that Ter Stegen ruptured his patella tendon and will require surgery, ruling him out for an estimated eight months. This would sideline him for the remainder of the current La Liga and Champions League campaigns. In light of this setback, Barcelona’s management, including head coach Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco, are set to meet urgently to discuss their goalkeeping options for the rest of the season.

With Ter Stegen unavailable, Barcelona must decide whether to rely on Pena, sign a free agent, or wait until the January transfer window for a potential long-term replacement. Pena, who has been with Barcelona since 2012, showed promise after coming on for Ter Stegen in the second half against Villarreal, helping his side maintain their dominant lead.

Another option for the Catalan giants is to promote 20-year-old Ander Astralaga, who has shown potential in the club’s youth system. While untested at the top level, Astralaga could provide backup to Pena in the short term if the club opts not to make a new signing.

However, La Liga rules do allow Barcelona to sign a free agent as an emergency replacement, should the club feel it necessary. Several potential candidates may be considered, though it remains to be seen if the club will pursue this route or wait for the January window.

One interesting development in Barcelona’s search for a temporary goalkeeper is the involvement of Claudio Bravo, a former Barcelona player who retired earlier this year. The veteran shot-stopper has reportedly expressed willingness to return to the club on a short-term basis, potentially providing a stop-gap solution while Ter Stegen recovers.

As Barcelona prepares to face Getafe on Wednesday, Pena is expected to start in goal. The club has yet to finalize its plans, but the upcoming discussions will determine whether they put their faith in their current squad or look for reinforcements before the January transfer window opens.
