Chelsea forward Cole Palmer has been named the England men’s player of the year for the 2023-24 season, an award decided by public vote. Palmer edged out competition from Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka, who finished second and third, respectively.
This accolade caps a remarkable year for the 21-year-old, who only made his international debut in November 2023 during a 2-0 win over Malta at Wembley. Palmer has since earned nine caps for the national team, starting two matches, and played a key role in England’s Euro 2024 campaign. He notably scored in the final, where England narrowly lost 2-1 to Spain.
Palmer’s recognition comes shortly after being named PFA Young Player of the Year for the 2023-24 season, highlighting his rapid rise. After joining Chelsea from Manchester City last summer, Palmer enjoyed an impressive debut campaign, netting 25 goals across all competitions.
For England, Palmer has scored twice and featured prominently at Euro 2024, with five of his nine appearances coming in the tournament. His performances on the international stage have solidified his place in Gareth Southgate’s squad, and he is expected to be included in the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against Greece and Finland.
With this award, Palmer becomes the first Chelsea player to win the honor since Ashley Cole in 2010, joining an illustrious group of past winners. Frank Lampard, another Chelsea legend, also claimed the award in 2004 and 2005. Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka had won the title for the last two seasons before Palmer’s triumph.
