Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has committed to a new five-year contract with the club after guiding them into next season’s Champions League. The 52-year-old Spaniard has revitalized Villa since arriving from Villarreal in October 2022, when the club was languishing in 17th place in the Premier League.
Emery quickly turned Villa’s fortunes around, leading them to a seventh-place finish in his first season. This campaign, he steered the team to an impressive fourth-place finish, securing a spot in the Champions League. “I am very happy to take this step and the responsibility of leading this club,” said Emery, whose existing deal had another three years remaining. “There’s a great chemistry in Aston Villa. And the element of the fans’ support also makes the difference to feel like home.”
In addition to domestic success, Emery led Villa, the 1982 European Cup champions, to the semi-finals of the Europa Conference League in their first European campaign in 13 years. “We are really excited to continue this journey with no limits to our dreams,” Emery added.
Chairman Nassef Sawiris expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “We are building something special here at Aston Villa with Unai at its core and we are delighted that he has signed a new deal with the club until 2029. As we move into our historic, 150th anniversary year, there is a lot to look forward to with Unai at the helm.”
Securing Unai Emery’s commitment is arguably the most crucial move for Aston Villa as they prepare for the Champions League. While squad reinforcements are expected, Emery’s new contract represents a significant coup for the club. Although his deal was extended until 2027 in April, Villa swiftly secured a longer-term agreement after the season concluded.
Emery’s appointment following Steven Gerrard’s departure in October 2022 has brought about a remarkable transformation. His new contract reflects both Villa’s ambition and the mutual trust between Emery and the club’s owners, working closely with Villa’s president of football operations, Monchi.
The unexpected Champions League qualification has delighted fans, and under Emery’s guidance, Villa is poised to compete confidently on the European stage. His extensive European experience, including four Europa League titles, bolsters the club’s prospects. Emery’s hero status at Villa Park is now cemented with his new contract, bringing joy to everyone associated with the club.
