Will There Be A Premier League Yorkshire Derby Next Season?

Leeds United

Perhaps the most famous Yorkshire-based football club, the club was founded in 1919 as Leeds United Association Football Club, and it has played its home games at Elland Road since 1919. Having won three English league titles, one FA Cup, and two League Cups. They have also been runners-up in the European Cup on two occasions.

Leeds United initially struggled in its early years, spending much of the 1920s and 1930s in the Second Division of English football. However, in 1964, the club appointed Don Revie as manager, and under his leadership, Leeds United enjoyed a period of unprecedented success.

Between 1964 and 1974, Leeds United won two English league titles, one FA Cup, one League Cup, and two Inter-Cities Fairs Cups. The team also reached the European Cup final in 1975, where it was defeated by Bayern Munich. During this period, Leeds United developed a reputation for playing an aggressive and highly competitive style of football, which earned the team both admirers and critics.

In 1992, the formation of the Premier League saw Leeds United become one of its founding members, and the club enjoyed a period of success in the 1990s and early 2000s. The team finished as runners-up in the league in 1999 and reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League in 2001.

Sheffield United

The club was founded in 1889 as an offshoot of Sheffield United Cricket Club and has played its home games at Bramall Lane since then, making it the oldest major football stadium in the world still in use. The club was one of the founding members of the Football League in 1888, and it won its first major trophy, the FA Cup, in 1899, defeating Derby County 4-1 in the final. In 1902, the club won its first and only top-flight league title, finishing two points ahead of Sunderland.

Sheffield United has won one top-flight title and four FA Cups, while Sheffield Wednesday has won four English league titles, three FA Cups, and one League Cup.

Sheffield United remained a top-flight team for much of the early part of the 20th century, finishing as runners-up in the league on two occasions and winning the FA Cup again in 1902 and 1915. However, following World War II, the club’s fortunes declined, and it spent much of the post-war era in the lower divisions of English football.

In 1971, Sheffield United won promotion to the Second Division, and in 1982, the club returned to the topflight of English football, where it spent six seasons. During this period, the club reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup twice and the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup. The 1990s saw Sheffield United’s fortunes decline once again, and the club was relegated to the third tier of English football in 1994.

Overall, Yorkshire-based football clubs have a rich history in English football, with several clubs having won major honours and competed at the highest level of the sport. Only time will tell if we get to witness a Yorkshire derby next season, should Big Sam manage to guide Leeds United to survival.
