Teams that have won back-to-back Champions League titles: Can PSG join them?

4 Min Read

Paris Saint-Germain arrive at the Puskas Arena in Budapest on 30 May as defending champions, looking to do something that has been achieved only a handful of times in the history of European club football.

With PSG vs Arsenal odds making Luis Enrique’s side the 6/5 favourites to retain their title, the question is whether they can join the most exclusive club in the game: teams that have won the Champions League in consecutive seasons.

A formidable historical record

The challenge of defending a European title has proven almost insurmountable in the modern era. In the pre-1992 European Cup era, several clubs managed it. Liverpool won the competition in 1977 and 1978, with Nottingham Forest following in 1979 and 1980. Ajax won three consecutive titles in the early 1970s under Johan Cruyff, while Bayern Munich and AC Milan each defended their crowns successfully in their respective eras.

In the Champions League era, however, only Real Madrid have managed it, winning three consecutive titles between 2016 and 2018 under Zinedine Zidane. Every other defending champion in the modern era has fallen short. Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Real Madrid themselves on multiple occasions have all been unable to retain the trophy.

The competition’s depth, the motivation of rivals, the physical and mental toll of a successful campaign, and the demands of domestic football combine to make back-to-back success extraordinarily difficult to sustain.

PSG’s route to the final

PSG’s campaign this season has had its edgy moments. They required the playoff round to secure their place in the knockout stage, edging past Monaco 5-4 on aggregate, a route that required them to dig deep early. But from the round of 16 onwards, their form has been sensational.

Eight goals against Chelsea across two legs, four against Liverpool, and five in a single leg against Bayern Munich in the semi-finals have produced a goals tally that underlines the quality and depth of Enrique’s attacking options.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembele, Vitinha, and Desire Doue have produced a collective attacking performance across this campaign that few teams in Europe could match. PSG’s ability to rotate and still produce decisive quality has been one of the defining features of their run.

What history says

Only eight clubs across the entire history of the European Cup and Champions League have won the competition in consecutive seasons. In the Champions League era, only one has done it. The Champions League odds reflect the difficulty of the task, but PSG are better equipped than most to challenge that record.

They have the squad depth, the financial resources, and the tactical clarity to make a genuine case. Whether they can handle the weight of that expectation against a well-organised Arsenal side will determine whether they write their name into a very short list of European giants.

And, PSG manager Enrique is confident, stating: “Do I believe we can win the final? Yes. Do you remember what I said after group stage? I said I don’t see any team being better than we are. The critics were saying that PSG are maybe not that great, but I was right.”
