Harry Maguire has officially extended his stay at Manchester United, putting an end to doubts about his future beyond the current campaign. His previous agreement had been set to expire in the summer, but negotiations in recent weeks led to a confirmed renewal.
The 33-year-old centre-back has signed a one-year extension that will keep him at Old Trafford until June 2027, with an additional option to prolong the deal by another 12 months. Reports had already indicated that an agreement was close, and the club has now formalised those expectations.
Maguire expressed pride in continuing with the club, describing the opportunity to represent United as a significant honour. He highlighted the personal importance of wearing the shirt and emphasized his enthusiasm to extend his time with the team into what will be at least an eighth season.
Experience and leadership valued within the squad
Since arriving from Leicester City in 2019 for £80 million — a record fee for a defender at the time — Maguire has made 266 appearances in all competitions. During his tenure, he also served as club captain between 2020 and 2023.
United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, praised Maguire’s professionalism and mentality, noting his resilience and influence within a developing squad. He pointed to the defender’s experience as a key asset for a group aiming to compete consistently for major honours.
Maguire himself acknowledged the ambition within the club, underlining a collective determination to pursue trophies. He also spoke of the strong connection with supporters and his desire to contribute to future successes alongside the current squad.
Mainoo expected to follow with new long-term contract
Attention now turns to Kobbie Mainoo, who is widely anticipated to sign a new deal of his own. The midfielder has re-established himself as a regular starter under interim head coach Michael Carrick after previously struggling for consistent opportunities under Ruben Amorim.
Mainoo’s current contract runs until 2027, including a club option for an additional year, but discussions are ongoing over an improved agreement. Reports suggest he has been offered a new five-year deal that would extend his stay until 2031.
Both Maguire and Mainoo have also been recalled to the England squad by Thomas Tuchel for the final two matches before the World Cup squad announcement in May. Each will be aiming to secure a place in the tournament set to take place in North America.
