At that time, the Fairs Cup had no away goals rule and no penalty shootouts.
If teams were level after both legs, the winner was decided by the toss of a coin.

Chelsea’s European fate was thus decided by pure chance — and they lost the coin toss, meaning DWS advanced to the next round.
