The conversation around the top goalkeeper in world football has intensified following contrasting yet equally impressive displays in the Champions League. David Raya drew praise after his decisive role in Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Sporting, with teammates even labeling him the best in the world. In the same competition, Manuel Neuer delivered a vintage performance for Bayern Munich against Real Madrid, prompting calls in Germany for his international return despite retiring in 2024.

Raya’s display included four crucial saves, notably tipping a powerful effort onto the crossbar to keep the match level before the winning goal arrived. His consistency in Europe has been notable, conceding just 12 goals in 23 matches since last season while preventing nine expected goals. Across all competitions in Europe’s top five leagues, he also leads in clean sheets with 22.

Despite these achievements, Raya is not Spain’s first-choice goalkeeper. Unai Simon remains the preferred option, described as “indisputable” by national team coach Luis de la Fuente. Still, former Arsenal defender Lee Dixon has called Raya “world class,” highlighting his authority and the trust he inspires in his defense.

Meanwhile, Neuer’s performance against Real Madrid stood out as one of the finest of his career. At 40, he continues to perform at an elite level, making his 136th Champions League appearance for Bayern. Peter Schmeichel described his showing as among the best he has ever seen, particularly praising a remarkable save to deny Kylian Mbappe.

Experienced stars and proven winners

Thibaut Courtois, currently sidelined with injury, remains a central figure in this debate. His absence has been noticeable for Real Madrid, given his record of 105 saves in 23 Champions League matches since last season, with a save rate of 78.2%. Although he has conceded more goals than Raya in that period, his achievements include multiple domestic and European titles, along with the 2022 Yashin Trophy.

Emiliano Martinez has also built a strong case, especially following Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph. He has collected several individual honors, including back-to-back Yashin Trophies in 2023 and 2024 and two Best FIFA awards. His Champions League numbers last season were equally strong, recording 49 saves and an 80% save percentage across 12 matches.

For Alisson, standout performances on the biggest stage continue to define his reputation. His display against Paris Saint-Germain in last season’s knockout stage was pivotal, earning him recognition as the difference-maker in a narrow victory. Since then, he has maintained an impressive save percentage of 86.1% in the competition. He was also the first recipient of the Yashin Trophy and has consistently ranked among the top candidates.

Gianluigi Donnarumma, now Manchester City’s first-choice, brings a commanding presence between the posts. While he has enjoyed success, including a Champions League triumph with PSG and two Yashin Trophy wins, questions remain about his adaptation to the physical demands of the Premier League, particularly during set-pieces.

Consistency, impact and emerging contenders

Mike Maignan has established himself as a reliable performer since replacing Donnarumma at AC Milan. After rising to prominence at Lille, he played a key role in Milan’s league title win in his debut season, leading in both clean sheets and save percentage. Former Brazil goalkeeper Dida praised Maignan’s consistency, placing him at the top of his personal rankings.

An additional name worth noting is Yassine Bounou. Now playing in Saudi Arabia, he previously impressed in Europe with Sevilla and finished third in the 2023 Yashin Trophy standings. His performances for Morocco, including their historic World Cup run and contributions during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, further underline his quality.

With a World Cup approaching, the debate over the leading goalkeeper remains open. Each contender brings a unique combination of achievements, form, and influence, making the question of who truly stands above the rest more compelling than ever.
