England coach Thomas Tuchel admitted that Marcus Rashford has yet to produce a standout performance in an England shirt. The forward, on loan from Manchester United, started in Saturday’s World Cup qualifier against Andorra but found it hard to influence the game against the hosts’ defensive setup.
Rashford was substituted in the 68th minute, with Anthony Gordon coming on in his place. His place in the starting XI is now in doubt for Tuesday’s upcoming clash with Serbia.
Loan move brings added pressure
The 26-year-old is also facing questions about his role at Barcelona. Since moving to the Nou Camp on loan in the summer—after a temporary spell with Aston Villa last season—he has managed just one start, which ended at half-time. Reports in Spain have even suggested that Barcelona could cut short the deal in January, despite having an option to sign him permanently next summer.
For now, Rashford’s main focus will be on regaining consistency for both club and country.
Tuchel still offers support
After the match at Villa Park, Tuchel stressed that while the attacker has not yet delivered the “wow” factor at international level, his effort and approach in training have earned him the staff’s trust.“He struggles a bit with the numbers and with the big performance in an England shirt, I agree,” Tuchel said. “But he trains well, stays positive, and has the right attitude. That is why we continue to believe in him.”
The manager sees Rashford’s best role on the left wing, where he can cut inside and attack defenders with an open view of goal. Tuchel suggested the forward found fewer opportunities on that side against Andorra’s back five but praised his strong preparation in training.
Rashford last scored for England in October 2023 against Italy, and Tuchel is determined to help him rediscover that form.
