Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag believes Joshua Zirkzee’s late debut goal will “boost his confidence” after helping secure a 1-0 victory against Fulham in their Premier League opener at Old Trafford. Zirkzee, the Dutch striker, made an instant impact after coming off the bench, scoring in the final moments of the match to give United the win.
Zirkzee demonstrated his abilities with the decisive goal, initially dropping deep to connect play before making a run into the box to finish off the move. His controlled touch saw him poke the ball into the bottom corner, clinching all three points for the Red Devils.
Zirkzee impressed by Zirkzee’s performance
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Ten Hag expressed his satisfaction with Zirkzee’s contribution, highlighting his versatility on the pitch. The United boss emphasized that, while finding the back of the net is crucial for a forward, Zirkzee’s all-around game will be key to his success at the club.
Ten Hag acknowledged that Zirkzee’s debut would help build his confidence but stressed that the team still had areas to refine. “It’s only his first game, but it’s a good way to strengthen his belief. There are several areas we need to work on, which is natural at this stage,” he added.
Substitutes prove pivotal in hard-fought victory
Ten Hag also credited his bench for making the difference in Friday’s contest, something he hadn’t been able to count on consistently during the injury-plagued 2023/24 campaign. Zirkzee’s match-winning appearance underlined the importance of having impact players ready to contribute.
“Substitutions are always key, and it’s great to see that in our first match, a substitute came on and secured the victory,” Ten Hag explained. “Everyone can see how crucial subs are, and they must always be prepared to make an impact.”
The match against Fulham proved to be a challenging one, but United’s defensive organization and pressing game helped them maintain control. Despite creating several scoring opportunities, the Red Devils struggled to capitalize on their chances until Zirkzee’s late intervention. “It’s always tough playing Fulham, but we pressed well and defended solidly. We had our spell in the game after the opening ten minutes, keeping them under pressure,” Ten Hag noted. “The only criticism is that we should have put the game to bed earlier.”
Reflecting on the importance of defensive stability, Ten Hag pointed to the need for a consistent backline to achieve success. He also spoke highly of new signing Noussair Mazraoui, praising the Moroccan defender’s composure on the ball but emphasizing that he still has room to improve his fitness levels.
