Mykhailo Mudryk’s former club, Shakhtar Donetsk, has criticized Chelsea’s handling of the young winger, claiming the club has not properly tapped into the player’s potential. Mudryk joined Chelsea in January 2023 in a highly anticipated £89 million transfer, beating Arsenal in a close contest for the Ukrainian international’s signature. However, he has struggled to secure a regular spot in the lineup, largely due to inconsistent form and frequent managerial changes.

Since new coach Enzo Maresca took charge, Mudryk’s appearances have been sporadic, with most of his time on the field coming in cup competitions. The 23-year-old started and scored during a UEFA Conference League game against Panathinaikos on Thursday, but otherwise, his outings have mostly been confined to European matches and the Carabao Cup. His only Premier League start this season was limited to 45 minutes in Chelsea’s August clash with Wolves.

The lack of consistent game time has drawn criticism from Shakhtar Donetsk general director Serhiy Palkin, who believes Chelsea is not utilizing Mudryk’s unique talents effectively. “You don’t need a Ferrari if you don’t know how to drive it,” Palkin remarked, expressing frustration over Mudryk’s situation at the club.

Mudryk’s reputation soared after a strong start in the 2022/23 season, including Champions League goals against RB Leipzig and Celtic, and an impressive goal tally in the Ukrainian Premier League. Despite his lack of extensive experience, Chelsea’s significant investment showed belief in his ability to become a star in English football.

Palkin, who has worked closely with Mudryk, remains confident in the winger’s potential. He emphasized Mudryk’s impact on the Ukrainian national team as evidence of his capabilities. “He is an absolute difference maker,” Palkin said, suggesting that given the right environment and support, Mudryk could flourish.

Mudryk’s tenure at Chelsea has been complicated by instability within the club. Since his arrival, he has already worked with five different managers. Initially signed when Graham Potter was at the helm, Mudryk saw interim stints with Bruno Saltor and Frank Lampard, before Mauricio Pochettino took over last season. Now, under Maresca, Mudryk is still trying to find his rhythm and secure a regular role in the squad.

With each new manager bringing different strategies and lineups, Mudryk’s development has faced continual disruption. Palkin’s comments reflect his view that Chelsea needs to prioritize consistency and a clear plan for the young talent, suggesting Mudryk’s best is yet to come if he’s given the opportunity to play regularly and develop.
