Manchester United has confirmed Ruben Amorim as their new head coach, succeeding Erik ten Hag following the club’s recent struggles in the Premier League. The 39-year-old Portuguese manager, who is currently leading Sporting CP, signed a deal that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2027. Officially taking the reins on November 11, Amorim will step in just before the season’s final international break. United acted swiftly after Sunday’s 2-1 loss to West Ham United, which left them 14th in the standings, with only three wins from their first nine games. The club paid Sporting a €10 million compensation fee to secure Amorim’s services.

Amorim admitted that the decision to leave Sporting mid-season was challenging, especially given their strong start to the 2024/25 Primeira Liga campaign. Sporting’s latest 5-1 victory over Estrela maintained their unbeaten run, underscoring the impact he’s had on the team. Initially, Amorim requested to delay his departure until the end of the season, hoping to see out his responsibilities with Sporting. However, United made it clear that this was a rare opportunity. “For three days, I wanted to stay, but I was told it was now or never, or United would look elsewhere,” he shared.

Amorim, who has been linked with managerial roles at several top European clubs, including Liverpool and West Ham, emphasized his enthusiasm for United’s project and the specific challenges it offers. “This wasn’t my first opportunity; there have been others. But after Sporting, I wanted this one – Manchester,” he said. Known for his modern coaching approach and tactical acumen, Amorim believes United will provide the structure he needs to implement his style effectively.

Amorim acknowledged Sporting fans’ disappointment but assured them it was a difficult choice. “The club trusts me to do things my way, and that’s what I’ve wanted in my next move,” he concluded, expressing appreciation for his time at Sporting while looking forward to his new chapter at Old Trafford.
