Shift towards tactical focus
In a conversation with the VAL Foot podcast, Varane discussed the transformation he’s observed in football over the years. He reminisced about his early days at Real Madrid, where he shared the pitch with luminaries like Kaká and Mesut Özil. However, as his tenure progressed, Varane noticed a shift in emphasis from individual flair to tactical systems, and often from players to managers.
According to Varane, this evolution has translated into a game that prioritizes tactical execution over individual brilliance. He highlighted a decrease in creative freedom, with fewer traditional playmakers, or “number 10s”, and diminished space between the lines. This shift has also resulted in fewer dribbling attempts and touches compared to earlier eras. Despite these changes, Varane acknowledged that the overall standard of play has risen significantly.
The rising standard
While lamenting the reduced variance within matches, Varane emphasized the positive aspect of football’s evolution: the relentless pursuit of excellence. He noted that matches are no longer considered “easy”, requiring substantial effort and strategic acumen to succeed. Despite the diminishing room for creativity and spontaneity, the game continues to witness a steady rise in quality, a testament to the dedication and skill of players worldwide.
