Liverpool have officially confirmed the acquisition of Federico Chiesa from Juventus for an initial fee of £11 million. The Italian winger, who gained widespread recognition during Italy’s triumphant Euro 2020 campaign, has now become part of Arne Slot’s squad. Chiesa’s dynamic style of play and attacking prowess made him a standout figure in European football, particularly during his nation’s victorious run at the Euros.
Last season, Chiesa found himself at a crossroads with Juventus after failing to reach an agreement on a new contract. This uncertainty was compounded when the club’s new manager, Thiago Motta, informed him that he was not in the plans for the upcoming season. This situation caught the attention of several Premier League clubs, but Liverpool acted swiftly to secure Chiesa’s services, outpacing Spanish giants Barcelona, who were also keen on signing him.
Upon signing with Liverpool, Chiesa expressed his excitement in an interview with the club’s official website. He recounted the moment Liverpool’s Chief Scout, Richard Hughes, and the manager reached out to him, saying: “When Richard Hughes called and asked if I wanted to join Liverpool, and then the coach contacted me, I immediately said yes. I’m well aware of this club’s history and the significance it holds for its supporters. I’m thrilled and can’t wait to begin this new journey.”
Barcelona had been optimistic about securing Chiesa’s signature, but they were ultimately hindered by bureaucratic challenges that allowed Liverpool to complete the deal. Chiesa, who netted nine goals in Serie A last season, now looks forward to contributing to Liverpool’s ambitions in the Premier League and beyond.
Juventus, meanwhile, have undergone a significant transformation this summer, with several key players leaving the club. Regulars such as Adrien Rabiot, Moise Kean, and Alex Sandro have all moved on, while Samuel Iling-Junior has joined Aston Villa, Daniele Rugani has been loaned out to Ajax, and Wojciech Szczesny has decided to retire. In response, Juventus have bolstered their squad with the arrivals of Douglas Luiz, Michele Di Gregorio, Khephren Thuram, Juan Cabal, Pierre Kalulu, Nicolas Gonzalez, Francisco Conceicao, and Teun Koopmeiners as they embark on a new chapter under Motta’s leadership.
