Edu Gaspar has stepped down from his position as Arsenal’s sporting director. The Brazilian, 46, initially rejoined the club in 2019 as technical director and was elevated to sporting director in November 2022. He had previously been part of Arsenal’s successful early-2000s squad, winning two league titles during his time as a player, including the 2003-04 season when Arsenal went unbeaten.

Edu called the decision to leave “incredibly hard,” emphasizing his strong connection to the club. “Arsenal will always remain in my heart. I wish the club and its supporters only good things and all the very best,” he stated.

Edu played a major part in shaping the club’s future, including recruiting manager Mikel Arteta, who led Arsenal to an FA Cup victory in his debut season. Though major trophies have since been elusive, Arsenal’s standing as Premier League title contenders has been revitalized, with Edu often credited for this resurgence alongside Arteta.

Reflecting on his time, Edu expressed pride in the relationships he built across Arsenal’s men’s, women’s, and academy teams, saying, “I’ve loved working with so many great colleagues, especially Mikel, who has become a great friend.”

Under Edu’s leadership, the club made key signings, including Martin Odegaard, Ben White, Gabriel, Gabriel Jesus, and Declan Rice. All of last Saturday’s starting lineup, except for academy talent Bukayo Saka, joined the club after Edu’s appointment. Despite some mixed results with signings such as David Luiz and Willian, Edu’s recruitment strategy helped Arsenal secure two consecutive second-place Premier League finishes.

Arsenal co-chair Josh Kroenke expressed gratitude for Edu’s contributions, noting that “change and evolution” are part of Arsenal’s vision as they look forward to sustained success. The club is preparing for further leadership transitions, with Richard Garlick stepping in as managing director this season following Vinai Venkatesham’s departure, and James King expected to join as director of football operations.
