Mauricio Pochettino, the manager of Chelsea, expressed his disappointment regarding a dispute over who would take a penalty during their recent 6-0 victory against Everton.

The incident occurred during the 64th minute when Nicolas Jackson and Noni Madueke engaged in a heated argument over who would take the spot-kick. Cole Palmer, Chelsea’s designated penalty taker, eventually scored his fourth goal of the match.

Confusion surrounding penalty taker

The confusion regarding the penalty taker escalated as multiple players vied for the opportunity to take the spot-kick. Initially, Madueke and Jackson both attempted to claim the ball from Malo Gusto, leading to a tense exchange between the two. Thiago Silva intervened, but the situation remained unresolved until captain Conor Gallagher stepped in and handed the ball to Palmer.

Pochettino clarified that Palmer is the designated penalty taker and emphasized the need for his players to respect that decision. He acknowledged that it is a learning process for the young team and apologized to fans for the unsavory incident. Despite the controversy, Palmer maintained his composure and successfully converted the penalty, showcasing his reliability from the spot.

Palmer’s penalty record and player reactions

Cole Palmer’s impeccable penalty record has been a highlight of Chelsea’s season, with the midfielder converting all nine penalties he has taken in the Premier League. Former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure holds the best 100% conversion rate in the competition’s history, having scored from 11 penalties.

Palmer himself downplayed the incident, asserting his authority as the designated penalty taker. He highlighted the team’s collective desire to take responsibility and win matches. However, Everton midfielder Dele Alli viewed the altercation differently, attributing it to the players’ youth and lack of experience in handling pressure situations.
