Wayne Rooney has reflected on the challenges players face during major transfer disputes, sharing a memory of supporters appearing outside his property in 2010.
The former England striker explained on his new BBC podcast that a group of individuals wearing masks gathered at his home at 3am, while his wife, Coleen, was awake feeding their son. Rooney said the police were called, and he confronted the group. He later signed a new contract with Manchester United the following day.
Rooney admitted the situation was unsettling and stressed that while criticism from crowds is part of football, visiting players’ homes crosses the line. He suggested the fans wrongly believed their actions pushed him into committing to the club.
Views on isak’s Newcastle future
Rooney compared his past to Alexander Isak’s current situation, where the forward has made clear his desire to leave Newcastle after Liverpool’s £110m bid was rejected at the start of August. Reports claim Isak has no intention of playing for the Magpies again.
He acknowledged that Newcastle supporters feel frustrated with the way the player has handled matters but said that staying now seems extremely difficult. Rooney added that while the club would want to keep a striker of Isak’s quality, financial regulations might encourage them to accept a sale in order to strengthen the squad overall.
From the player’s perspective, Rooney believes the opportunity to join Liverpool, who have just secured the league title, is too significant to ignore.
Thoughts on new arrivals in England
Attention has also focused on Newcastle’s reported interest in Benjamin Sesko before the Slovenian forward chose Manchester United in a deal valued at £73.7m. Sesko’s scoring record in Germany has been outstanding, and Rooney predicted he could be one of the standout additions in this transfer window. He praised his physical qualities and finishing but cautioned that the challenge of playing at Old Trafford is unique.
Rooney also highlighted Arsenal’s signing of Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting. Having faced him during his time at Coventry, Rooney said Gyokeres combines energy, work rate, and goals, and he expects him to connect quickly with the club’s fanbase.
Manchester United’s recruitment in attack, including Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo, was described by Rooney as an essential reset after last season’s struggles. However, he insisted the side must still bring in a defensive midfielder, with Brighton’s Carlos Baleba linked.
Grealish’s move to Everton
Another deal Rooney praised was Jack Grealish’s loan switch from Manchester City to Everton. The midfielder had fallen down the pecking order at City after limited appearances last season.
Rooney, who began his career with the Toffees, said the move offers Grealish a chance to reignite his career and prove himself again. He revealed the pair spoke about shirt numbers, with Grealish eventually choosing 18, previously worn by Paul Gascoigne and later Rooney.
He underlined that Everton supporters demand commitment and effort and expressed confidence that Grealish’s skill combined with hard work would make him a favorite at Goodison Park.
