Veteran Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal has expressed his full commitment to adapting to any position on the pitch under the leadership of the club’s new head coach, Xabi Alonso. As the Spanish international continues his recovery following a lengthy absence due to injury, he emphasized his willingness to contribute wherever needed during the upcoming 2025–26 season.

Carvajal, who has served as a dependable figure in Madrid’s backline for over a decade, is preparing for his return to competitive action after enduring a serious knee issue that ruled him out for most of the previous campaign. Now back in training, the experienced full-back is aiming to secure playing time and regain his rhythm under Alonso’s tactical system.

The 33-year-old lauded the new manager’s approach to team dynamics, particularly noting the tactical flexibility that Alonso has introduced since taking charge. Carvajal stated that he is more than ready to take on any assignment given to him — whether it be in defense or other parts of the field — in order to support the squad. His readiness to adapt, he said, even extends to playing in goal if the situation demands it.

Back from injury and focused on a fresh start

The 2024–25 season proved to be a frustrating period for Carvajal, who sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury during a league match against Villarreal in early October. The incident forced him to the sidelines for the remainder of the season, dealing a significant blow to both the player and the team. The nature of the injury meant an extended rehabilitation process, and Carvajal was unable to participate in any further matches that year.

However, the tide is beginning to turn for the Spaniard, as he resumed group training earlier this month. Though he is still regaining full match fitness, he shared that he is feeling physically strong and mentally refreshed. While acknowledging a lack of match rhythm, Carvajal noted that he is gradually reintegrating into the team environment and is prepared to give his all when called upon.

Speaking to the press, he expressed confidence in his recovery and shared that he remains hopeful about making the matchday squad soon. Though unsure whether he will be selected for the next fixture, he stressed that if given the opportunity, he will approach the game with total commitment and without hesitation.

Competition and confidence ahead of the new season

As Carvajal works his way back into the lineup, he is also preparing to compete for his place in a squad that now features new additions. Among the fresh faces is England international Trent Alexander-Arnold, who arrived at Real Madrid during the summer transfer window from Premier League champions Liverpool. The arrival of the attacking right-back means Carvajal will face intensified competition for a starting role in the upcoming campaign.

Despite the challenge, Carvajal remains optimistic and motivated. With high confidence levels and renewed energy, he is focused on contributing to the team and proving his worth on the pitch. He reiterated his commitment to the club and praised Alonso for creating a versatile system that demands adaptability from all players, including repositioning talents like Aurélien Tchouaméni.

Real Madrid, the record 15-time winners of the UEFA Champions League, will return to action soon in the FIFA Club World Cup. They are scheduled to face Juventus in the round of 16 on Tuesday, with the match set to take place at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. While Carvajal’s inclusion in the squad remains uncertain, his determination to return stronger than ever is clear.
