Real Madrid icon Toni Kroos has opened up about the challenging conversation he had with head coach Carlo Ancelotti when he revealed his decision to retire. According to Kroos, Ancelotti had hoped he would continue playing for at least one more season, making the decision to leave an emotional one for both.
Kroos, who has long been regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of his generation, chose to retire after a highly successful season. Real Madrid had clinched the La Liga title well before the final weeks of the season, allowing Kroos time to reflect on his future and eventually communicate his decision to Ancelotti.
“It was tough to tell Carlo,” Kroos said in an interview with Marca. “He was expecting me to stay, and we’ve always had a fantastic relationship. He was my first coach at Real Madrid, so it wasn’t easy to break the news.”
Kroos admitted that the timing of his decision was heavily influenced by the team’s success in La Liga. With the league title secured early, he felt it was the right moment to talk to Ancelotti. He noted that had they still been in the thick of the title race, the timing would have been much more complicated.
“I waited until after we won La Liga,” Kroos explained. “If we were still battling for the title, I wouldn’t have wanted my decision to become a distraction. There was a perfect window between the La Liga victory and the Champions League final, so I felt that was the best time.”
Rather than making a public announcement, Kroos opted for a more personal approach, telling his teammates individually. He took the time to have longer conversations with players he had grown especially close to during his time at the club.
“I didn’t want the news to leak or become a headline before I had the chance to tell my teammates directly,” Kroos said. “I told them one by one over a couple of days, because I wanted to make sure they heard it from me first.”
Kroos also shared how both the club and the media respected his wishes to control the timing of his announcement. Real Madrid allowed him the space to make the news public when he was ready, and remarkably, no information leaked beforehand.
“I was surprised nothing got out,” he admitted. “The club respected my decision, and I’m glad I was able to retire on my own terms.”
Kroos’ retirement marked the end of an illustrious career at Real Madrid, capped by a La Liga title and a triumphant Champions League final. Despite Ancelotti’s hopes for one more year, the midfielder chose to step away from the game at the height of his success.
