Chelsea have secured the signing of Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo on a free transfer. The 26-year-old centre-back will join the Blues on a four-year contract, starting when his current deal with Fulham expires at the end of the month.
Adarabioyo, who rejected a lucrative offer to stay at Fulham in April, is making the move to Chelsea with aspirations of playing in Europe, as Chelsea have qualified for next season’s Europa Conference League.
Adarabioyo’s excitement and set-piece improvement
Expressing his enthusiasm about the move, Adarabioyo said, “Chelsea is a huge club and this is a full-circle moment for me. I was born three miles away from Stamford Bridge and made my professional debut there. I’m very excited and looking forward to helping push the club in the direction we want to go.”
Chelsea are hopeful that Adarabioyo’s arrival will bolster their set-piece record, both offensively and defensively. To support this, they have signed coach Bernardo Cueva from Brentford in a £750,000 deal to establish a dedicated set-piece department.
Impact on squad and rivals’ interest
Adarabioyo’s signing could prompt the departure of Chelsea academy defender Trevoh Chalobah, who is available for sale this summer and has attracted interest from Manchester United. Additionally, veteran defender Thiago Silva, 39, will leave Chelsea to rejoin Brazilian club Fluminense.
Chelsea managed to secure Adarabioyo despite significant interest from rivals. Manchester United made a late attempt to lure him, but Adarabioyo remained committed to Chelsea, honoring his agreement. Chelsea’s decisive move also disrupted Newcastle’s month-long negotiations for the defender, while Atletico Madrid showed interest but couldn’t match the Premier League options.
The former Manchester City academy graduate chose Chelsea due to the promise of an important role, the opportunity to work with new manager Enzo Maresca again, and his belief in the club’s project. The Blues’ qualification for Europe also played a crucial role in his decision.
Chelsea are optimistic that Adarabioyo’s presence and his 6ft 5in stature will significantly improve their performance at set-pieces, both in attack and defense.
