Shaw, the sole specialist left-back in Gareth Southgate’s lineup, missed England’s initial four matches of the tournament due to a hamstring injury. The Manchester United star made his return as a second-half substitute in the quarter-final win over Switzerland, marking his first competitive appearance since his injury in February. “Of course, I think I am [fit and ready to play 90 minutes],” Shaw asserted. “That is down to Gareth’s decision. I feel fit and ready to go.”

Shaw’s recovery took longer than initially anticipated. Despite plans for his return during the group stage in Germany, Shaw’s rehabilitation extended, necessitating Kieran Trippier to fill in at left-back. Reflecting on his injury woes, Shaw shared, “The last four months have been incredibly challenging. Initially, I was expected to be back much sooner, but numerous setbacks delayed my return.” Shaw’s late appearance against Switzerland provided him with his first minutes of competitive football since February. “It was a relief to finally get some minutes on the pitch. I’ve been eager to play,” Shaw said. He had been initially scheduled to return around the second or third game of the tournament, but the recovery process was slower than planned.

The England medical team, along with Southgate and assistant manager Steve Holland, have been pivotal in Shaw’s recovery journey. Expressing his gratitude, Shaw stated, “Before the squad announcement, we aimed for a comeback around the second or third game, but things didn’t go as planned. Nonetheless, the support from Gareth, Steve, and the medical staff has been immense.” Their consistent support helped Shaw navigate the tough period of rehabilitation and setbacks. “They were really there for me, not just Gareth and Steve, but the medical staff as well. I have a lot to thank them for,” he added.

With Shaw now feeling fit and ready, Southgate faces a decision on whether to include him in the starting lineup as England continues their Euro 2024 campaign. Shaw’s readiness to contribute comes at a crucial time as the tournament progresses to its later stages. His presence could provide a significant boost to England’s defensive options. “I think before the squad got announced, we had a plan to come back around the second or third game but, unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned and I was pushed back a game or so,” Shaw explained. Now, with Shaw back in action, England’s prospects look even brighter as they aim for glory in the tournament.
