Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has challenged Brazilian winger Antony to prove his worth and earn his place in the squad. Antony, who joined United from Ajax in 2022 for £82 million, is the club’s second-highest signing ever, following Paul Pogba. Despite the hefty price tag, Antony has struggled to make a significant impact at Old Trafford, recording just five goals and three assists in 55 Premier League outings. His contribution last season was minimal, with only one goal and a single assist as United finished in eighth place.

Competition for starting spots

The 24-year-old has barely featured this season, playing just one minute in a competitive fixture against Brighton. Manager Ten Hag has opted to start Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and Amad Diallo ahead of Antony, with all three attackers already finding the back of the net this season. Antony was also rumored to be on the radar of Turkish side Fenerbahce before the transfer window closed, adding to speculation about his future at the club.

Ten Hag addressed the competition in his squad, stating that Antony needs to surpass his teammates in both performance and chemistry to secure more playing time. “The other players are doing so well – they’re contributing,” Ten Hag said. “He has to outshine them. He needs to earn his spot in training.”

Earning a spot in the Carabao Cup

Antony hopes to have a more significant role in Manchester United’s upcoming Carabao Cup third-round match against Barnsley at Old Trafford. However, Ten Hag emphasized that players must fight for their place in the lineup. “You’ll see what the starting team will be,” Ten Hag hinted, leaving the decision open until game day.

The Dutch manager underscored that daily training performances and a strong attitude are critical for earning playing time. “In top-level football, there are certain standards,” Ten Hag remarked. “Players must compete for their positions, and the team with the best dynamic and chemistry will have the best chance to win.”
