Outgoing Barcelona boss Xavi has issued a stark warning to his successor, suggesting the role comes with significant challenges. The 44-year-old Spaniard, who was dismissed before overseeing Barcelona’s final game of the season—a 2-1 victory against Sevilla—spoke candidly about the difficulties his replacement will face. Hansi Flick, the former manager of Germany and Bayern Munich, is expected to take over.
Xavi, who had a contract until 2025, had initially planned to depart the club in January but reversed his decision, opting to remain at Camp Nou in April. He emphasized the complexities of managing Barcelona, stating, “To the new manager, I tell you: ‘You will suffer.’ This is a very complicated place to be. This is a difficult job and you have to be patient.”
Xavi stepped into the head coach role in November 2021, achieving immediate success by securing La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup in his first full season. Despite this, the current season saw Barcelona finishing second in La Liga, trailing 10 points behind champions Real Madrid. His dismissal came just a month after the club announced he would continue in his role, following comments he made about the club’s financial issues, which reportedly displeased president Joan Laporta.
Expressing his feelings about his tenure, Xavi remarked, “I have the feeling that everything I have done in these two and a half years has caused an earthquake. I have been targeted many times in many situations.” He voiced his belief that his contributions were “not sufficiently appreciated” and stated regarding his dismissal, “I had no choice but to accept it. It doesn’t matter if I agree with the arguments.”
The former Barcelona player revealed he is open to future opportunities but acknowledged the need for a break. “It’s so difficult to coach Barcelona,” he admitted. “It’s been tough last week, but I have my conscience very clear. I’m proud and happy.” Xavi’s tenure, marked by significant achievements and notable challenges, underscores the demanding nature of leading one of football’s most storied clubs.
