The FIFA World Cup is arguably the most glamorous sporting event in the world. It provides thrills, frills, excitement, entertainment and unfortunately some embarrassing moments. In every World Cup edition there are favorites and those who are deemed minnows or underdogs.
In the event of an underdog defeating a world powerhouse, it is called an upset or embarrassment depending on the opposition or the scoreline. Here are some of the most embarrassing or biggest upsets in World Cup history.
Brazil 1-7 Germany (2014)
On the strength of the opposition here, the Brazilians would normally have no problem in losing such a fixture. Well, the problem lies in the destructive nature of the scoreline and the fact that it was done on Brazilian soil. This is the top of our most embarrassing moments because the sufferers are the most successful team in World Cup history!
The Germans played such a perfect game that if there were to be more goals in the game, it would have come from them. While the Brazilians had the ball and tried to create magical moments, the Germans worked on punishing and inflicting quick damage to the hosts. This remains one of the most embarrassing score lines in football history.
DPRK 1-0 Italy (1966)
Forget about the scoreline, this is the most crushing defeat in World Cup history. The North Koreans may be superpowers in nuclear weapons and war, but they are above minnows in football, and at the time they were actually minnows. The 1966 World Cup is mostly remembered for the English triumph and the heroics of the likes of Sir Bobby Charlton but the North Koreans defeating the Italians was almost just as huge a news.
USA 2-0 Mexico (2002)
Choosing this game might look somewhat strange to us in 2022, but as at the time it was an unprecedented feat. The Mexicans are one of the biggest countries to have never won a World Cup, but they always seem to hang around. At the 2002 World Cup the United states barely scraped past the group stage, whilst the Mexicans won their group comfortably. The result was also surprising because many expected the Americans to be knocked out from their group. To them at the time, beating the Mexicans was an impossible feat hence the big surprise.
Algeria 2-1 West Germany (1982)
The Algerians were making their debut appearance at the world stage. The Algerians were runners up at the AFCON in Nigeria (1980), so there was hope and expectation. However, they faced an overconfident Germany side that boasted to disgrace their opponents. The result proved otherwise and sent ripples all across Germany and Europe.
