The organisers of the 2022 FIFA World Cup continue to roll out rules and regulations that tourists, players and the general public must adhere to during the showpiece event.
These rules are dampening the spirits of fans ahead of the tournament which is shaping up to be the most exciting FIFA World Cup in history.
The latest rule as disclosed by the local organising committee of the World Cup in Qatar is that ‘one night stands’ or extramarital affairs are prohibited at the tournament which is slated to hold from November 21 to December 18, 2022. Defaulters of this rule will be subject to local Qatar laws and could face prosecution and a seven-year jail sentence. There is also the option of huge fines with lesser punishments, all according to local laws.
Qatar are trying to maintain their status as a deeply religious country but many are seeing this as an infringement of their rights. This rule also comes after many global human rights activists have voiced their displeasure at FIFA for awarding the tournament to the gulf nation, especially for their treatment of women and workers.
Qatar 2022 an opportunity to learn about gulf nations
This is the first World Cup to be hosted in a gulf state (Gulf States include Bahrain, UAE, Qatar etc) and as a result, many, unsurprisingly, are oblivious of the cultural differences in these countries. In these countries, religion and cultural values are taken very seriously and failure to abide by their rules leads to stiff penalties, even if you are a visitor on business or as a tourist.
The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) of Qatar 2022 has announced in a written statement that, “Qatar is a conservative country and public displays of affection are frowned upon regardless of sexual orientation”. These announcement has especially not gone down well with United Kingdom nations, with some Welsh football staff planning a boycott of the tournament due to the country’s strong stance on gay rights.
The governments of the UK are also concerned that its citizens would be restricted from doing ‘natural’ things during the Mundial.
“Sex is very much off the menu unless you are coming as a husband and wife team,” said a police informant from Qatar in an interview with the Daily Star. “There definitely will be no one-night stands at this tournament. There will be no partying at all really.
“Everyone needs to keep their heads about them unless they want to risk being stuck in prison.
“There is essentially a sex ban in place at this year’s World Cup for the first time ever. Fans need to be prepared,” advised the police informant.
