Middlesbrough have completed the signing of striker Will Lankshear from Tottenham Hotspur, with the 21-year-old putting pen to paper on a five-year contract at Rockliffe Park. The fee was undisclosed by both clubs, though the deal is widely reported to be worth an initial £10 million, rising to as much as £20 million if add-ons are triggered. Lankshear becomes Boro's fourth arrival of the summer, following Jeremy Sarmiento, Myles Peart-Harris and Kyle Joseph through the door at the club's Hurworth training base. Lankshear began at Sheffield United, where he captained the Blades youth team to silverware before Tottenham moved for him in August 2022. He wasted little time making an impression in north London, earning both his Europa League and Premier League debuts early in the 2024-25 season and scoring against Galatasaray in November 2024. First-team minutes proved harder to come by thereafter, with loan spells at West Bromwich Albion and then Oxford providing the regular football his development needed.

Boro's Summer of Reinvestment

Middlesbrough have not been short of funds this window. The sale of Hayden Hackney to Everton brought in an initial £16.5 million, with add-ons capable of pushing that beyond £20 million, and Hackney's departure left an obvious hole in a squad that had just fallen at the final hurdle. Hackney was Boro's Player of the Year for 2025, which puts the scale of the rebuild into some perspective.

Sarmiento, Peart-Harris and Joseph were the first three pieces. Lankshear is the marquee one, and the fact that Boro were prepared to commit to a five-year deal for a 21-year-old says a good deal about how they see the next phase of the project under Hellberg.

What It Means for Tottenham

For Spurs, this is a significant piece of trading. Lankshear cost them a reported £2 million from Sheffield United four years ago, and even the fixed portion of this deal represents a healthy multiple of that outlay. Reports also indicate Tottenham have protected themselves against the striker kicking on, negotiating a sell-on percentage and matching rights on any future transfer, which would allow them to match an offer Middlesbrough accept further down the line.

It is consistent with how Tottenham have operated all summer, cashing in on academy and fringe assets while funding heavy investment in the senior squad. For the player, meanwhile, the trade-off is straightforward: guaranteed minutes and a central role, rather than a place in the queue.
