Real Madrid have completed the £51.8m signing of Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella, with the full-back putting pen to paper on a six-year deal.
The 27-year-old is currently in North America with Spain for the World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, but the framework of the move — £47.5m up front plus a potential £4.3m in add-ons — was settled on Sunday ahead of Monday's official confirmation.
The transfer marks a fresh wave of activity at the Bernabeu. With Florentino Perez returned for another term as president and Jose Mourinho installed in the dugout, Real are also understood to be pursuing Manchester City's outgoing midfielder Bernardo Silva and Inter Milan full-back Denzel Dumfries. France defender Ibrahima Konate, meanwhile, is expected to complete a move to the Spanish capital following his departure from Liverpool.
A long-awaited return to Spain
Cucurella's switch represents a long-anticipated return to La Liga for a player who graduated from Barcelona's academy. He had been linked with Atletico Madrid and a possible reunion with Barcelona, and was understood to be keen on a move back to his homeland.
He leaves Stamford Bridge having helped Chelsea lift the Conference League as well as the Club World Cup, having arrived from Brighton for £63m in 2022.
Soured relationship at Stamford Bridge
The defender's relationship with the club's hierarchy had cooled. During the March international break he gave an interview critical of the Chelsea board in the wake of Enzo Maresca's mid-season exit, and he was among a group of Spanish-speaking players said to be unsettled by the upheaval, struggling for form under Maresca's replacement, Liam Rosenior.
With three years still left on his contract — the product of improved terms agreed last season rather than a fresh extension — Chelsea opted to cash in once Real's offer arrived.
It caps a turbulent campaign at Stamford Bridge. Rosenior was ultimately dismissed, and the club limped to a tenth-place finish that left them without European football, even after Calum McFarlane stepped in as caretaker. Former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso has since been appointed to lead Chelsea into the 2026-27 season.
