Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of Marcos Senesi, the Argentina international defender who got called up yesterday to the 2026 World Cup, will join the Club on 1 July, subject to international clearance, following the expiration of his contract with AFC Bournemouth. The move brings a physical, left-footed centre-half to north London on a free transfer, adding proven Premier League experience and leadership to Roberto De Zerbi’s defensive options.
From San Lorenzo to the Premier League
Born in Concordia, Argentina, Senesi came through the youth ranks at Buenos Aires giants San Lorenzo before breaking into the senior side and making his professional debut in September 2016. After roughly a decade in the Argentine capital, he moved to Europe in 2019 to join Feyenoord, where he reached the KNVB Cup Final in his first season and featured in European competition in all three of his campaigns in Rotterdam, including the run to the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League Final in 2022.
He arrived in England later that year, signing for AFC Bournemouth, and spent four seasons on the south coast. The defender played a central role as the Cherries steadily climbed the table, signing off by helping the club secure European football for the first time in its history.
A standout final season at Bournemouth
Last term ranked among the best of his career. A genuine ball-playing defender, Senesi completed more than 2,300 passes in the top flight, with no outfield player completing more long passes than his tally of 182. He also offered a threat going forward, registering more assists than any other centre-back, while sitting inside the Premier League’s top three for interceptions, blocks and clearances. An Argentina international since 2022, he has three senior caps to his name.
What they said
On joining, Senesi said it was a special feeling to become a Tottenham player, adding that the Club had shown from the outset how much they wanted him to be part of their project. He pledged to give his best every time he steps on the pitch, to make the fans proud and to help take the Club back to where it belongs, stating his desire to win trophies in north London.
Sporting Director Johan Lange described Senesi as a defender who combines quality, intelligence and leadership, praising his experience at the highest level, his composure in possession and his appetite to compete for every ball. Lange said the Club believed Spurs was the perfect place for the defender as he enters a strong stage of his career.
Head Coach Roberto De Zerbi highlighted Senesi’s quality on the ball and competitive edge, noting that he would strengthen the side defensively while offering flexibility in formation. De Zerbi said the Argentine reads the game well, is comfortable in a possession-based system and has the personality to thrive in a demanding environment, adding that he admired the defender’s mentality and desire to keep improving.
Welcome to Tottenham Hotspur, Marcos.
