Tottenham Hotspur host Charlton Athletic at White Hart Lane on Sunday 9th January 2011 in the Third Round of the FA Cup.

This will be the 80th time the two clubs have met.

The first meeting came in November 1929 in the Semi-Final of the London FA Charity Cup at West Ham United's Upton Park in a game which Spurs won 5-3.

The teams met for their first League game in the Second Division just under a month later at the Valley with Charlton coming out on top 1-0. Spurs won the reverse fixture at White Hart Lane in April 1930 3-0.

Another match in the London FA Charity Cup was won by Spurs 6-0 at the Lane in October 1930.

The clubs met for four more seasons in the Second Division until the outbreak of World War Two with Spurs winning four games, Charlton winning three and one game drawn.

Spurs and Charlton met regularly during the wartime years and a total of 19 games were played during this period.

The first meetings in the First Division came during season 1950-51 and Spurs drew 1-1 at the Valley with Alf Ramsey scoring a penalty and won 1-0 at White Hart Lane with Sonny Walters scoring the winning goal. Spurs finished that season as Football League Champions for the first time.

The teams met for another six seasons in Division One up to season 1956-57 with Spurs winning seven games, Charlton winning four and one match drawn.

Spurs beat Charlton 3-2 in the FA Cup Third Round in 1961 with goals from Les Allen (2) and Terry Dyson. Tottenham would later win the FA Cup to go along with the League Championship which was also won that season.

Spurs dropped down to Division Two for season 1977-78 and lost 4-1 at the Valley with Peter Taylor scoring, but won the return game at White Hart Lane 2-1 with a Glenn Hoddle penalty and a John Pratt goal.

The teams were drawn together in the FA Cup Third Round in 1985 and Charlton drew 1-1 at the Lane with Garth Crooks scoring for Spurs. The replay at the Valley was won by Spurs 2-1 with goals from Mark Falco and Tony Galvin.

Charlton regained their Top Flight status in 1986-87 but lost both games to Spurs that season 2-0 at the Valley with Niko Claesen and Tony Galvin scoring while the match at the Lane ended 1-0 with a Clive Allen goal.

Charlton remained in the First Division for a further three seasons with Spurs winning two games, Charlton winning one and three matches drawn.

Spurs were founder members of the Premier League in 1992-93 with Charlton getting promoted in 1998-99. The match at White Hart Lane was drawn 2-2 with Alan Nielsen and Chris Armstrong scoring for Spurs, who won at the Valley 4-1 with goals from Darren Anderton, Oyvind Leonhardsen, Sergei Rebrov and an own goal from Charlton's Richard Rufus.

There were 14 more Premier League meetings before Charlton's relegation at the end of season 2006-07 resulting in six wins apiece and two draws.

Saturday's match will be the 5th FA Cup game between Spurs and Charlton, who have yet to win against Tottenham in the competition.

The clubs have never been drawn against each other in the Football League Cup.

Overall, Spurs have won 44 games, Charlton have won 24 and 11 matches have been drawn.
