Netherlands forward Memphis Depay has spoken about about his future at Barcelona, which is uncertain following the events of the season thus far.

The former Olympique Lyonnais man returned to action against Senegal in the Netherlands’ opening 2022 World Cup match after two months out recovering from a hamstring injury which he suffered playing for Barcelona.

In that time, Barcelona have moved on from him, fielding either Ansu Fati, Ferran Torres, Raphinha and Ousmane Dembele in his preferred left wing. The tactics have worked greatly for the Catalan club, that many believe Memphis’ time at the Spotify Camp Nou to be over.

Speaking to the press after his return to action for the Netherlands, Memphis, who was Barcelona’s highest goalscorer in the 2021/22 season, talked about his excitement to be able to play again while expressing his uncertainty at his future with Barcelona.

“I am very happy to play again. I have needed a long time to reappear. It hasn’t been easy mentally, but I’ve worked hard to get there and I’ve played half an hour. It’s a step. It’s incredible to play football again,” he said after the win over Senegal.

“If you don’t play well but win 2-0 against the African champion, you can’t not be happy, but we have to improve. Now we are happy, but from tomorrow it is time to think about Ecuador. The injury has been hard, but I’m already recovered and I’m enjoying a World Cup.

“We have a good team that can prove things. I don’t want to think about the past, I’m focused on the World Cup. I also don’t want to think beyond this competition. I don’t know what will happen after the World Cup.”

This admission could be the opportunity that Manchester United could be looking for after it emerged that he was a transfer target of theirs in the summer.

His first stint at Old Trafford ended badly, but after redeeming himself in France with Lyon and sealing a move to Barcelona, he is thought to be in a better place and a good option on e again to bolster the Red Devils’ attack.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag also worked with Delay at PSV Eindhoven before going into to begin his coaching career.

The Premier League giants have also parted ways with Cristiano Ronaldo after his bombshell interview in which he spoke about several things, including his perceived treatment by the club and the ownership’s attitude towards the footballing side of the club.

Depay will be an affordable replacement in the January transfer window, and one who cmcan strengthen them significantly as they mount a late charge for top four.
