England skipper Harry Kane has come out in defence of his team after they failed to score against the USA in their second Group B match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Another World Cup outing will go by with England failing to get the better of the USMNT despite constantly besting them in friendlies and warm up games. The USA team, meanwhile, will keep the age-long soccer vs football debate going thanks to the bragging rights they hold over their long-time rivals.
Both teams could not get the better of each other despite trading chances throughout the game. The Americans could also have gone ahead on more occasions than the English, but the woodwork and some good defensive blocks helped England stay in the game.
The Three Lions fans were displeased with the performance, especially after their team put six past Iran in their first group game. However, Kane has chosen to focus on the positives from the game as they look forward to their third and final group game.
“We know we can play better but it’s a draw in the World Cup,” Kane said to journalists after the game. “No game is easy in the World Cup, after our first game people thought we would landslide every team but that wasn’t the case.
“We came up against an organised team with some quality players so we have to respect that, clean sheet is really pleasing, a point isn’t what we came here for but at least we’re in a good position.”
Kane is yet to get off the mark in this year’s tournament after winning the golden boot in the 2018 edition. He created two goals in their 6 – 2 dribbling of Iran, however, but calls for him to step up and lead from the front increased after the USA draw.
England is now hanging on for dear life at the top of the table with four points from two games, while USA are on two points after two draws from two.
Iran’s team, who suffered a heavy defeat on their opening day pulled off an incredible upset against Wales to grab all three points at the death. They are now in second place and breathing down England’s neck.
England will be hoping that Wales do not pose a challenge like the USA did as they look to finish as leaders, while USA will be working towards their first win of the tournament against Iran, who have proven to be a tricky opponent.
