Borussia Dortmund boss Edin Terzic says his side never stopped believing they could get a result after coming from two goals down to seal a point late against Bayern Munich on Saturday.

Die Borussen came from 2-0 down to draw with Bayern Munich and prevent their rivals going top of the Bundesliga in what was an entertaining match at Signal Iduna Park.

Anthony Modeste headed home a 94th-minute equalizer after Bayern’s Kingsley was given his marching orders earlier in stoppage time.

Youssoufa Moukoko had ensured the game had a nervy last quarter following his 74th-minute strike.

Earlier Bayern teenager Jamal Musiala set up goals for Leon Goretzka and Leroy Sane either side of half-time.

With less than 20 minutes on the clocked, Bayern looked set for another victory against familiar foes, with Sadio Mane and Germany international Musiala both having second-half chances.

But Dortmund rallied, led by England teenager Bellingham, who was given the captain’s armband at half-time when regular skipper Matt Hummels was substituted.

The draw meant the hosts stayed fourth in the table, level on points with Bayern Munich in third.

Terzic hails Dortmund’s attitude

Speaking after the game, Terzic said: “It was a very intense match. In the first half in particular, we defended very well and kept it compact in the middle. The ball was in front of us. We gave away only that one shot at goal which made it 1-0. At that point, it’s not so easy to keep your discipline when the emotions and the desire to take risks are being transmitted to the team from the stands.”

“You then need to be careful that you don’t open up too early and that the gaps don’t become too big. It got wild towards the end; that was also the aim of the substitutions. It was end to end. What was very positive was that we believed up until the last moment that something was still possible, even though we’d missed a huge opportunity to equalize in the 82nd minute.”

Terzic concluded by saying his side clearly deserved a point: “It was a very deserved point, because we created many chances at the end. When you’re 2-0 down against Bayern, the match normally ends 4-0 or 5-0. That didn’t happen today. We were able to put an exclamation mark behind the mentality question for today.”

Bayern’s slump continues

It has been an uncharacteristic domestic season for reigning Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich. Only 16 points from nine games means they have now dropped almost half the points they did in the whole of last season.

Union Berlin and Freiburg lead the way at the top of the standings, despite playing one game less but Bayern remain the favourites regardless to retain their crown.
