Gabriel Magalhaes reveals he convinced Jesus to join Arsenal

Gabriel Magalhaes has revealed he played a part in convincing fellow Brazilian Gabriel Jesus to switch to north London this summer.

The forward joined the Gunners in a £45m swoop from Manchester City, making him the north London’s side most marquee signing.

Jesus was familiar with Mikel Arteta, who was once the assistant coach at Manchester City and that played a part in his decision to move to the Emirates. However, certain other factors contributed to his decision, which includes a growing Brazilian contingent at Arsenal. In this case, Gabriel Magalhaes was influential in convincing his countryman and namesake to join him in north London.

Many Arsenal players have already spoken highly of Jesus and Gabriel Magalhaes becomes the latest to do so.

“Gabriel is a really good guy,” the centre-back told Sky Sports when asked about new team-mate. “Of course, it helps that we have the Brazilian link. When we were on international duty, we discussed his future and I was telling him, ‘Come to Arsenal! Come to Arsenal!’

“He is someone who is very focused and really enjoys working hard,” adds Gabriel. “He is here to improve the team and he is already doing that. He has come here with big expectations. He wants to achieve big things with Arsenal. I think he is really going to help us.”

Though he did not grab a goal, Jesus had a stellar performance in Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Friday and is now one of four Brazilians – and, of course, three Gabriels – in the Arsenal dressing room. Speaking on the coincidence and ‘confusion’ that could sometimes cause, Gabriel says it is no issue at all.

“Sometimes people shout, ‘Gabi, Gabi!’ and all three of us look around,” says Gabriel with a smile.

“But out on the pitch, one is Jesus, the other is Martinelli, and I’m Gabi. It’s a bit complicated for people, but it’s not so difficult for us. We talk a lot and we understand each other well.”

Arsenal ready to win against Leicester City

Arsenal take on Leicester City at the weekend and Gabriel is feeling confident ahead of the game, while stating that there is a positive buzz within the Gunners’ squad.

“We are definitely in a better place now,” says Gabriel.

“There were lots of changes at the club in the summer and it was important to make a good start. The determination and focus we showed against Crystal Palace were key to getting the three points.”
