Riyad Mahrez has penned a new two-year contract extension with Manchester City, with the deal now keeping the player at the Etihad until 2025.
The Algerian forward has been one of the most vital figures in Pep Guardiola’s ranks, since joining from Leicester four seasons ago.
In that time, he has played his part and has inspired City to three Premier League titles, three League Cup triumphs and an FA Cup trophy to go with. The Citizens also came close to winning the Champions League in the 2020/21 season, but narrowly got beaten by Premier League rivals Chelsea in the finals.
Mahrez has been a regular for City under Guardiola, making 189 appearances since he joined the club. He has contributed with 63 goals and 45 assits.
Speaking after signing his new contract, Mahrez explained his delight at putting pen to paper, while adding that he did not need any convincing to extend his stay at the club.
“I’m very happy to sign the new deal,” Mahrez said to the club’s official website.
“I have enjoyed every single minute of my time here. It’s a pleasure to be part of such an incredible Club.
“To have helped us achieve the success we have enjoyed in the past four seasons has been unforgettable and made us all hungry to look to achieve even more.
Mahrez was also on hand to thank Guardiola for his impact, alongside the coaching staff who have helped him improve his overall game.
“I would also like to thank Pep, Txiki and the coaching staff, both for the way they have helped me to develop as a player and for pushing me to continue to improve.
“Now I just want to try and play my part in helping us be successful next season and beyond.”
In similar fashion to Mahrez, many top figures in the club’s ranks were also delighted to see the Algerian commit to another extended stay.
Director of Football Txiki Begiristain added: “Riyad has played a major part in our success in the four years since he joined us, and we are all delighted he has agreed this new deal.
“He has brought so much to the Club with his skill, talent, commitment, and desire to win evident from the moment he first arrived. I also know that Pep and the coaching staff relish working with Riyad.
“He is one of the most exciting wingers operating in the game and we are all very excited to know he will be part of our ongoing drive to try and achieve more success.”
