Ukraine Dedicates win over Scotland to Ukraine Armed Forces

Ukraine returned to football with a win over Scotland in their playoffs semi-final to set up a meeting with Wales for a ticket to the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The game was the Ukrainians’ first competitive fixture since November last year. The game was initially scheduled to be played in March but the country was attacked by neighbouring Russia effectively throwing the country into turmoil and cancelling the game.

The break seemed not to have affected the Ukrainians who made the match a one-sided game. Despite training for longer and under more organised circumstances, the Scots were swept aside and looked clueless on occasion.

West Ham United forward Andriy Yarmolenko scored the first goal with a wonderful lob over the goalkeeper before Roman Yaremchuk scored to double the lead. Callum McGregor halved the deficit for the Scots but Artem Dovbyk scored in the dying minutes to kill the game.

The win has given them renewed hope in not only their football but their future because it represents the grit of the nation as a whole, who have suffered great losses due to the Russian invasion.

The victory becomes even more impressive when you look at the circumstances that the Ukrainians had to deal with prior to the game. The squad had 16 players from the local league who had not tasted football action for a while. However, the performance betrayed that fact because the team outplayed their hosts.

Manager of the Ukrainian national team Oleksandr Petrakov was emotional in his post-match press conference. He expressed hopes that the win would bring succour to an ailing nation facing the worst time in her history. “The win was not for me nor the team but for the entire country,” the head coach stated.

He also specially dedicated the win to the armed forces fighting off the Russian invaders now. It is a befitting dedication as a number of sports personalities took up arms alongside the country’s armed forces to fight the invaders.

Petrakov also extended his gratitude to the 50,000 Scottish fans who applauded him and his team after the match. “We want to extend our gratitude to the home fans who have been amazing,” said the grateful Petrakov.

The Ukrainians will now turn their attention to their next fixture against Wales in Cardiff for a chance to play in the World Cup for the first time since 2006.

They will be riding on the mood of the nation to the finals and will hope they can slay the Dragons from Wales who will surely come with bellies full of fire as they seek a first World Cup appearance in over five decades.
